Ministers are allegedly plotting a £150 council tax rise in London boroughs, cleverly concealed within their funding plans. This revelation comes from Shadow local government minister David Simmonds, who accused the government of hiding this proposed hike in the fine print of their council funding reforms. And this is the part most people miss: the increase would be on top of a 5% council tax rise in both 2027/28 and 2028/29, affecting not only Westminster and Wandsworth but also Hammersmith, Fulham, and the City of London.
But the controversy doesn't end there. Local government minister Alison McGovern defended the plan, stating that removing referendum principles for rises over 5% would allow for more funding to be allocated to areas with higher needs. She assured that the final decision on council tax levels rests with the local authorities themselves.

He warned that residents would face reduced funding for local services and significantly higher council tax bills.
