"The Mercedes-powered teams have made a lot of improvements since day one," Russell explained. "The gap has closed drastically, but we're still concerned about the limited practice time in Melbourne."

Energy deployment will be a key focus this season. Drivers need to manage and regenerate energy over a lap to maximize speed. While racing should be smoother aerodynamically, deployment will still play a crucial role, especially on circuits with long straights like Melbourne.

"You can definitely follow another driver more easily this year," Russell said. "There's less aero disturbance due to the new regulations. The big difference is the variability in energy deployment between cars and drivers, which will likely outweigh the aero turbulence."
