George Russell, the Mercedes driver, has some intriguing insights to share. He believes that while Red Bull still has an edge when it comes to battery deployment, the gap between the two teams has narrowed significantly. In fact, Russell describes the gap as having "closed drastically" compared to previous seasons.
Previously, Russell had expressed concern over Red Bull's advantage, calling it "pretty scary." But now, he's confident that Mercedes has made substantial improvements. Team principal Toto Wolff had estimated Red Bull's advantage at up to a full second, but Russell's latest comments suggest that Mercedes is catching up fast.
"Their deployment definitely still looks the best on the grid," Russell acknowledged. "It was a surprise to everyone, but we'll see how things shake up in Melbourne."
As the pre-season testing concluded in Bahrain, PlanetF1.com reports that Mercedes and Ferrari are the teams to beat. Red Bull, meanwhile, is said to be on par with McLaren in the chasing pack. Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies agrees, admitting that Mercedes and Ferrari are slightly ahead at this early stage.
But here's where it gets controversial... Russell still believes that Red Bull's engine, the Red Bull Powertrains, is the current benchmark for battery deployment. However, with pre-season testing complete, he's confident that Mercedes has narrowed the gap.
"The Mercedes-powered teams have made a lot of improvements since day one," Russell explained. "The gap has closed drastically, but we're still concerned about the limited practice time in Melbourne."
Energy deployment will be a key focus this season. Drivers need to manage and regenerate energy over a lap to maximize speed. While racing should be smoother aerodynamically, deployment will still play a crucial role, especially on circuits with long straights like Melbourne.
"You can definitely follow another driver more easily this year," Russell said. "There's less aero disturbance due to the new regulations. The big difference is the variability in energy deployment between cars and drivers, which will likely outweigh the aero turbulence."
