Doctors, Beware: Your Credentials are on the Line! The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) Issues a Stark Warning
PETALING JAYA: The MMA is sending a clear message to doctors: your professional reputation is at stake. Amidst growing concerns, the association is reminding doctors to uphold their ethical obligations and ensure that every prescription and medical service associated with their name is conducted with the utmost care and supervision.
The issue at hand involves reports of doctors leasing their credentials to aesthetic clinics, leading to the prescription of powerful weight-loss medications without proper oversight. This practice, if proven, is a serious breach of professional conduct and a direct violation of the duty of care doctors owe to their patients.
Dr. Thirunavukarasu Rajoo, the president of the MMA, emphasizes that the responsibility of a doctor's actions remains with the doctor themselves. He states, 'The Letter of Credentialing and Privileging (LCP) is a testament to a doctor's competence, clinical judgment, and accountability. When a clinic operates under a doctor's name without genuine supervision, or when an LCP is effectively rented, the responsibility does not vanish.'
Dr. Thirunavukarasu highlights the potential dangers of prescribing medications like semaglutide (Ozempic) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro) without proper medical assessment and follow-up. These drugs, originally designed for diabetes and obesity management, can cause severe gastrointestinal issues, dehydration, and other complications. Moreover, this practice limits access to these medications for patients who genuinely need them.
The doctor further stresses, 'Financial arrangements should never compromise clinical standards. Whether it's a physical clinic, an aesthetic center, or a digital telemedicine platform, medicine should not be reduced to a transactional relationship.'
The public is urged to be vigilant and verify the credentials of their doctors. Patients should ensure that their consultations include a comprehensive assessment and counseling. Dr. Thirunavukarasu reminds us, 'No injection or procedure is without risk, and informed consent requires full transparency about benefits, risks, and alternatives.'
The MMA supports investigations and enforcement by relevant authorities when breaches are identified, ensuring that doctors uphold their professional standards and the well-being of their patients.
